Summary

  • Fall front porch trends for this year include starting with a soft neutral base and including pops of rich, deep fall colors.
  • Sustainability and using decor that has been thrifted or foraged are encouraged.
  • Ambient lighting using lanterns, candles, or string lights will be on the rise.

As the autumn season approaches, many of us are feeling the itch to dust off our fall items and start creating festive outdoor scenes. If you’re anything like me, you’re already looking at ideas for transforming your front porch with fall-themed decor. If you’re looking for fresh inspiration, paying attention to trends can give you a great starting place, so we spoke with designers about what fall trends they are seeing for front porches this year.

Malak Bellajdel, an interior design consultant for Jamali Gardens, explains how quite luxury will be big this fall, and the secret to success will begin with your color palette

Keep reading to hear what our designers had to say about upcoming fall front porch trends.

Use Soft Neutrals As a Base

Before adding decor pieces, you need a strong base to work with, and designers like Bellajdel believe that soft neutrals, like beige or taupe, are the perfect backdrop to help other colors pop without feeling overwhelming.

If your home already features soft, neutral tones, you have a great base to work with. However, Bellajdel states that you can incorporate these tones using other decor items as well.

“Look for planters and pots in muted oatmeal or add a creamy ivory wreath,” Bellajdel suggests.

Incorporate Natural Textures

Bellajdel recommends layering in materials that offer a natural texture after your base is set. She notes that a braided jute rug or a hand-woven rattan basket is an excellent addition, but natural textures can be introduced through other materials such as wood, leather, or even natural foliage.

However, natural textures aren’t something you need to spend a chunk of change on. Alexis King, the founder and lead interior designer of 2117 Collective, says foraged finds are in for this fall, so your backyard could contain plenty of potential decor.

“As a sustainable and budget-friendly option, finding your own branches, dried florals, and grasses adds an organic charm. Place them in a large vase or vessel to add height to your arrangement,” suggests King.

Other decor items, like rugs, tables, or planters, you can source from second-hand or thrift stores, as sustainability continues to be a trend we’ll see this year.

Add Pops of Deep, Rich Fall Tones

Fall decor isn’t complete without autumn-inspired hues, and designers believe this year, deep, rich choices are the way to go.

“Look for deep, inviting colors like mocha or a jewel-toned maroon. A pop of burnt orange can still be used, but in a muted tone that feels sun-faded and vintage. For a bit more of a modern twist, add a touch of plum,” says Bellajdel.

The key to using deeper tones is to use them sparingly, according to Bellajdel. Pillows on a bench, a cozy knit throw draped over a chair, or a seasonal wreath on your door can serve as the perfect subtle touches that will make an eye-catching scene.

King notes that you can’t go wrong incorporating the fall staples: mums, pumpkins, and greenery. Selecting rich, deep colored tones of these classic fall items can give a sophisticated look.

Using darker tones can also make an easy transition into Halloween decor once October arrives.

Try Ambient Lighting

Never underestimate the value of lighting, even when decorating outdoors. King says that ambient lighting will be a trend to look for this fall, and is essential for setting the mood for your fall porch decor.

“Look for warm-toned lanterns, whether battery-operated, solar-powered, or real flame, paired with whimsical string lighting or softly glowing pathway lights to create a welcoming atmosphere,” says King.

Feature Unique Planters

Decorating any space is elevated when personal, individual choices are added, and your front porch is no exception. King suggests that unique, one-of-a-kind planters featuring seasonal plants may become a trend we could see more of this year, particularly as DIY and sustainable accents continue to gain popularity.

“Handmade ceramic vessels, vintage wooden stands, or weathered stools can add layers of character and warmth,” explains King. “Take the time to explore local shops or fall markets. Pieces with a story make your porch feel personal and lived-in.”

While following trends is a great source of inspiration, ultimately your porch should reflect your personality and preferences, so don’t hesitate to make the space your own.
