Key Points
- Before organizing, take everything out of your bedroom closet so you have a clean slate.
- Use old baskets, storage bins, and organizational systems first before buying anything new to minimize clutter.
- Invest in quality closet hangers to prevent clothes from slipping off and creating piles on the floor.
When it comes to organization, my mom has the best tricks for streamlining any space, especially a bedroom closet. She has always been on top of transitioning her closet seasonally, so it’s easier to find what she needs for the warmer or colder weather.
With summer right around the corner, I asked her to share her favorite tips for organizing a bedroom closet so it works better for me (and you).
Start With a Clean Slate
Although you may assume it’s easier to work with the current closet systems you have, it can actually create more unnecessary work in the long run. My mom recommends taking everything out, so you can actually see all the items you have on hand. This way, you’ll be able to sort through what you want to keep and donate.
Once everything’s been emptied out, vacuum thoroughly, especially in hidden crevices that haven’t seen the light of day. Then, use some disinfecting wipes to clean all the dirty surfaces.
“When you have a clean slate, it’ll also help your mind to reset,” my mom says.

Use What You Already Have
You don’t need to need to go out and buy more organizational items—my mom suggests going through what you already have to see what can work as vessels.
For example, she’s transformed storage bins by taking off the lids and flipping them horizontally to house some bulky sweaters and sweatshirts on the top shelf of a closet. She’s also used some old wicker baskets to store scarves, blankets, and other linens.
Opt for Quality Hangers
One investment my mom will consistently make is closet hangers. She’s a strong believer that good hangers will make or break your closet.
“When you have flimsy hangers, it will cause your favorite tops and jackets to fall off, which can lead to messy piles on the floor,” she says. “It can be frustrating and intimidating to constantly start over every time you open your closet.”
My mom personally loves velvet hangers since silk blouses and heavy jackets are more likely to stay on. Another trick she likes to use is buttoning the first button on tops so it’s really secured on the hanger.
Don’t Forget Accessories
Accessories may not even cross your mind since they’re often smaller items, but creating efficient systems for them will make a huge difference, my mom says.
Whether it’s hats, scarves, or belts, find baskets or specific hangers that will make it easy for you to see everything you have on hand.
“They can easily get lost or create clutter if they’re not stored properly,” my mom says.
