Snoop Dogg, iconic rapper and now visual artist, recently dropped an art collection at auction that reportedly got bidders fired up: the top lot included the rapper’s mug shot and a partially smoked blunt.
The collection, dubbed Ashes to Art, sold for $148,100, AllHipHop reported on Monday. The centerpiece of the collection titled Snoop Doggy Dogg Genesis Burn features Snoop’s signed and burned 1993 LAPD mugshot with partially smoked blunt. According to the description, “This isn’t just a portrait—it’s a timestamp from the fire that forged an icon.” The piece sold for $70,000.
At the time of his arrest, Snoop faced charges for his alleged involvement in a drive-by shooting, for which he was ultimately placed on house arrest. He was later acquitted in February 1996.
Another front runner was DoggyStyle Decoded, complete with an original Doggystyle CD, a joint tip, and a metal ashtray, which fetched $16,500.
The auction featured a total of seven original works that Snoop created in collaboration with artist and Joint Venture co-founder Erica Kovitz.
The pieces, including Snoop Doggy Dogg Genesis Burn, were coated in crystal clear epoxy and a layer of marijuana resin before being framed in an acrylic shadowbox. Bidding for each of the works started at $9,000, and all of the works in the collection sold.
